This 40-page graphic novella was a companion piece to “The King-Killing Queen” by Shawn Speakman. It was based on a short story of the same name, also by Speakman, and adapted by Robert Napton for Skybound Entertainment. I layed out and penciled the book, but had to share the inking because of time constraints. The story follows the venerable priest, Emmer, as he tries to end a war between humans and fae.
Triumph Over Peanuts
Allergist Dr. David Reeder wanted to create a book that would educate kids and parents who are learning about life with allergies. Together with my frequent collaborator, Patrick Johnson, we created the story of a girl wrestling with her new peanut allergy. Since I have a daughter with multiple food-related allergies, this project was especially close to my heart.
Lords of Vegas: Underworld
Lords of Vegas & Lords of Vegas: Americana
I created the box art for both the new edition of the base game and for the Americana expansion. I also finally learned the non-Hollywood story of the OK corral when doing research for the character portraits.
Tales from Howl Town
An Amazon delivery driver is stuck in gothic Howl Town in the midst of a werewolf outbreak. Clues help the player choose which town resident to exile into the night, but the accusation will either banish the werewolf or give it another victim. Amazon Games published this mystery game at Halloween and it was featured on their front page.
Button Men
Designed by James Ernest and published by Cheapass Games, Button Men is a strategy dice game set in a city of crime families and territorial disputes. It’s about beating people up. I loved this job because it’s kind of work I truly enjoy: bringing an eclectic cast of characters to life.
Star Wars Christmas Cards
Brian Herring was a principal puppeteer for BB-8 in the Star Wars sequel trilogy who I met at a con in Seattle because of our shared love of the rolling droid, and I have had immense fun doing a couple of Christmas cards for him.
The Island of Dr. Lucky
Published by Cheapass Games, the original “Kill Doctor Lucky” is the reverse of Clue, where the players choose a weapon and a location to off the titular doc. Well, this time they’re on an island! This marks the first game board I’ve illustrated, and I also did the box art.
Sometimes the Magic Works
I was asked to create the cover and interior illustrations for the special edition of this writing memoir by Terry Brooks and published by Grim Oak Press. It was a little surreal being asked to draw illuminating cartoons of one of fantasy’s modern masters, but I had such fun doing it and knowing that Terry was approving it.
Tak
James Ernest brought the fictional game from “The Wise Man’s Fear” into the real world, and I had the pleasure of creating the cover and a few interior illustrations for the official rulebook (which can also double as a game board). I created several designs of ornate Tak pieces from the world of Temerant, and I used myself and my wife for many of the pose references, but the one of Pat and James is from a game they played at….Origins, I think?
The Kingkiller Map
For the 10th anniversary edition of the Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss wanted a new map of the Four Corners of Civilization. A whole metric ton of details and improvements went into this map.

Pairs
Pairs is a fast-paced pub game where the objective is to avoid getting a pair, and wagers are encouraged. There are many many versions of pairs decks, and I’m so happy I could make a pair of them! The first deck was based on the Fae realm from the Kingkiller Chronicles and features lots of scantily-clad fae. The second deck was based on the not-for-children picture book “The Adventures of the Princess & Mr. Whiffle” and features some….macabre imagery.
